It is often used as a part of Panchakarma (the Ayurvedic detoxification process) to maintain eye health, alleviate various eye disorders, and promote overall well-being of the visual system.

Procedure of Netra Tharpanam:

Preparation of the Ghee: The ghee used in this therapy is medicated with various Ayurvedic herbs known to have healing properties for the eyes. The ghee is typically prepared with herbs such as Triphala, Saffron, or Indian gooseberry (Amla), which are known for their benefits to the eyes.

Creating a Protective Barrier: A dough ring (often made of wheat flour or a similar substance) is placed around the eyes to create a small reservoir or pool. This ring holds the medicated ghee around the eyes.

Application of Medicated Ghee: The warm, medicated ghee is carefully poured into the dough ring, which forms a protective barrier around the eyes. The ghee is then allowed to remain on the eyes for about 20-30 minutes while the person lies back in a relaxed position.

Relaxation: During this time, the ghee is absorbed through the skin around the eyes, nourishing the eye tissues and improving circulation in the eye region. The person may also be advised to close their eyes and relax to enhance the benefits of the treatment.

Benefits of Netra Tharpanam:

Improves Vision: Regular practice of Netra Tharpanam is believed to enhance vision, especially for those experiencing eye strain, fatigue, or those with conditions like myopia (nearsightedness) and presbyopia (age-related farsightedness).

Prevents Dry Eyes: The nourishing effect of the ghee helps to soothe and hydrate the eyes, which is beneficial for people experiencing dryness or irritation due to environmental factors like air conditioning, long hours in front of screens, or pollution.

Reduces Eye Strain: People who spend a lot of time on computers, reading, or working in low light conditions may find relief from eye strain and fatigue after undergoing Netra Tharpanam.

Promotes Eye Health: The medicated ghee nourishes the delicate tissues around the eyes and is said to prevent eye diseases, including cataracts, conjunctivitis, and glaucoma, when used as part of a regular eye care routine.

Enhances Mental Clarity: This therapy not only benefits the physical eyes but also has a calming and rejuvenating effect on the mind, promoting mental clarity and reducing stress.

Delays Age-Related Changes: By nourishing and revitalizing the eye tissues, Netra Tharpanam may help delay age-related changes in the eyes, such as wrinkles or weakening of the vision.
